Cricket in Antigua:
Official cricket matches tend to be played on Thursdays, Saturdays,
and Sundays. The cricket season in Antigua runs from January through
to July. The sport is extremely popular with the local island dwellers
and keenly supported by the majority.
Prior to Viv Richard's arrival in international cricket, West Indies
cricket stars tended to come from Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad &
Tobago and Guyana. As soon as Viv became debatably one of the best
international cricket players in the world it fuelled Antigua's love
and passion for the sport. Antigua Recreation Ground in St John's
became test cricket's 52nd test venue in 1980-81 when it hosted England
and the island has produced a number of great cricketers, including
Andy Roberts and Richie Richardson.
